Long Description ( LONGDESC ): This color drawing was sketched by William Phipps Blake on November 15, 1853 looking south, southeast into the Colorado Desert. It depicts he and his party as they were descending through the northern section of what is now known as the Coachella Valley. Several riders on horseback can be seen along with several covered wagons being drawn by teams of what appear to be four horses for each wagon. In his book of these events he describes mules drinking water, so it may be that what appear to be horses are actually mules. The desert in front of them is pictured as a washed out and faded white. Bleak mountains to the west can be seen (not pictured are the Chocolate Mountains to the west) along with additional mountains in the distance to the south, southwest. The mountains to the right show a sloping landscape in front of them to illustrate they were descending down a slope, although it seems to be slightly exaggerated for illustration purposes compared to the slope of the actual land.
